Overview

Rutgers University's Center for Continuing Professional Development is partnering with Rosetta Stone to provide faculty, staff, and alumni the opportunity to work independently in approximately 20 different languages. Rosetta Stone has a proven methodology, a breadth of language offerings, and multiple levels of instruction per language to complement any language level. In addition, participants can learn languages that are not currently offered as part of the college cirriculum.

Rosetta Stone's methodology of learning a language includes levels of competency from Level 1 (basic conversational skills) to Level 5 (a deeper understanding).  Each level within the program outlines the skills that you will master once the level is completed.  The number of levels will depend on the language you select.  Here is a brief description of the levels:

  • Level 1
Build a foundation of the fundamental language you selected and learn the essential language structure.  You will gain the confidence to begin to learn and speak the language of your choice.  You will master basic conversational skills, including greetings, introductions, simple questions and answers, and shopping.

  • Level 2
Build your vocabulary and the language structure as well as navigate your surroundings in the language you selected.  Learn how to speak about your environment such as getting and giving directions, telling time, reading menus, and basic social conversation.

  • Level 3
Build on your conversational skills and connect with world around you in the language you selected.  Gain a better understanding of the fundamentals and essentials of the language.  Learn to share your ideas and opinions, express your feelings, and speak about daily activities as well as current events.

  • Level 4
Build on the speaking skills you developed in Levels 1 through 3.   Develop the conversations skills to interact in the workplace, care for your health, and move abroad.

  • Level 5
Build your vocabulary to a higher level by being able to discuss politics, the economy, and effectively handle emergency situations.
